CEREMONIALLY UNVEILED BOARD WITH THE NAME OF DORTMUND SQUARE IN NOVI SAD

01.11.2022.

The Mayor of Novi Sad Milan Đurić, together with the Mayor of Dortmund Thomas Westphal, ceremonially unveiled a board with the name “Trg Dortmunda (Dortmund Square)” in honour of forty years since the signing of the Charter on twinning of the two cities. The Commission for the names of parts of inhabited places of the Assembly of the City of Novi Sad decided this year that Novi Sad should get the Dortmund Square, on the plot in front of the PWC "Vode Vojvodine", next to the “Trg neznanog junaka (Unknown Hero Square)”. Dortmund is located in Germany, has about 600,000 inhabitants and is 1,500 kilometers from Novi Sad. In that City, a twin City of Novi Sad since 1982, for five years there has been the “Novi Sad Square (Platz von Novi Sad)”, named so, in the name of the successful cooperation between the two cities.

During the visit to Novi Sad, the Dortmund delegation visited the prominent cultural and historical sights of the City with their hosts, got to know more about the contents offered by the European Capital of Culture in the year of the title. In addition to the meeting of the two Mayors that was held in the City Hall, a symbolic unveiling of the board of a new street named after the honorary citizen of Novi Sad Hannelore Lamché in Veternik, near the roundabout, was also held. On this occasion the Mayor Milan Đurić welcomed the delegation from Dortmund, expressing the hope that they will take only good memories from Novi Sad, their twin City.

- The relationship that exists between Novi Sad and Dortmund is called sincere friendship. Today, together with our friends from the German City, we are unveiling a board with the inscription of the new street, as well as the square in our City, called the Dortmund Square. A few years ago, Novi Sad Square was officially opened in the very heart of Dortmunt. In addition to geographical features, the merits of a certain City should also be taken by paying tributes and giving an emphasis to the importance of special friends. In this way, posthumously, some people will remain written in the history of the City. This is also the case with the new name of the street in Veternik, which is related to the story of our close relations. The humanitarian Hannelore Lamché, who permanently attached herself to our City through her actions, is now formally woven into Veternik, one part of Novi Sad, which was closest to her heart. Our honorary citizen got a street named after her today, all at the initiative of those whom she helped a lot over two decades, namely the Home for Children and Youth with Developmental Disabilities - Mayor Milan Đurić said.

The Mayors also discussed the possibility of Dortmund to establish a festival like Exit, following the example of Novi Sad and they exchanged the experience related to energy sources and the functioning of the public sector, in this challenging time.

The Mayor Thomas Westfal, pointed out that he feels very comfortable in Novi Sad and expressed his gratitude for the nice gesture.

- Today, as citizens of Dortmund, we are very proud, because we can say that we have our own square in Novi Sad. It is an expression of friendship and cooperation between our cities, which we want to nurture in the future. We are glad to be associated with Novi Sad, which is beautiful and constantly developing. This also goes with Dortmund, which constantly strives for the modernization. While Novi Sad is the cultural capital of Europe, Dortmund is currently the Capital of Innovation in Europe. If you look at those two titles combined, you will see the soul of our cooperation before you. That's why we talked about the future in culture, in the field of sports and youth, as well as investing in the development of technology -  Mayor Thomas Westfal pointed out.
