The Mayor of Novi Sad, Miloš Vučević, and the Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, Ambassador Michael Davenport, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, expressing the intent of the City of Novi Sad and the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia to jointly open the EU Info Corner in Novi Sad. The EU Info Corner will be part of the Delegation’s communication activities, aiming to improve the knowledge about the European Union, in direct contact with the citizens and visitors of Novi Sad, with active support of the city government. After signing the Memorandum, Mayor Miloš Vučević added an entry into a special manuscript entitled "EU accession: New chapter in the book of Serbia's history", while the signatories later jointly visited the Public Company "City Construction and Development", the site of the GIS center with the GIS system, which is one of successfully implemented projects financed by the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia.
- We are proud that the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia recognized the City of Novi Sad as a local self-government who would be a reliable partner, one of links in the chain of Serbia’s EU accession. This EU Info Corner in our city is just the first in a series of steps we will undertake as the City, for the purpose of promoting the values and qualities of the European Union, which Serbia and Novi Sad will acquire in the negotiation and accession process – said the Mayor, adding that the City will in the coming period continue to nurture regular and open communication with the EU Delegation in Serbia and that it will be even more active in submitting project applications for the EU funds.
The intention is to open the EU Info Corner during 2014 in Bulevar Mihajla Pupina 17, where citizens and visitors would directly get information about the functioning of the European Union and cooperation between Serbia and the EU member states.
The Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, Ambassador Michael Davenport, said that an important referendum about the European Union is awaiting the citizens of Serbia in the coming years and this method of informing is hence of great importance. The citizens of Novi Sad will have insight into comprehensive and reliable information, including the answers about all the possibilities and advantages of EU membership, especially in the domains of economics, regional development, agriculture, science and education.
- It is my great pleasure that we are starting this new initiative, the opening of the EU Info Corner, by signing this Memorandum in Novi Sad. I would like to congratulate the city government, led by Mayor Vučević, for responding to our initiative quickly and efficiently – said Mr. Davenport, adding that the EU Info Corner will open its doors during this year.
