The meeting between the representatives of the City of Novi Sad, non-governmental organizations and volunteers involved in the environmental protection, as the first step in the project ELAIN - Environmental Local Authorities Interbalkan Network, was held in the City Assembly of Novi Sad today.
The project is a result of signing of the “Memorandum of Understanding on Interbalkan Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection“ between the City of Novi Sad and the Association of Environmental Protection of the City of Athens and Piraeus. One of the goals of the Memorandum is the planning and implementation of programs of a common framework of action by using more technologically advanced and innovative applications for solving problems in the field of environmental protection.
- This project was approved by the European Commission under the “Europe for Citizens“ Program and it is very important for the citizens of Novi Sad, since its goal is finding the best solutions for the problems in the field of environmental protection. The project will last from February this year to April of 2015. The aim of today's meeting is to jointly identfy, with the representatives of non-governmental organizations, the environmental problems and the problems that the City Administration faces in their resolution. During the meeting we should also set up a working group that will represent Novi Sad at the upcoming international meetings - Marinela Zagorac, Head of the City Administration for the Environmental Protection said.
Besides Novi Sad, the realization of this project involves seven partner cities: Athens (PESYDAP), Niš, Sofia, East Sarajevo, Bijeljina, Rijeka and Tirana, and local meetings will be organized in every city. The first international meeting will be held in Tirana in early March this year.
The meeting, organized by the City Administration for the Environmental Protection, was attended by the representatives of the Local Economic Development Office, City Administration for Urban Development and Housing, the City Administration for Utilities, City Administration for Inspection, PUC "City Parks" and the PUC "City Sanitation“, while the invitation for the meeting attendance has also been submitted to 24 addresses of different organizations that deal with the environmental issues.
